Essential oils for teachers & students
As a teacher, it’s hugely important to take care of yourself to prevent the risk of teacher burnout.
Lately, I’ve been looking for healthy alternatives to support my well-being and I’ve started experimenting with using essential oils.
I thought I’d share the 3 best essential oils for teachers, that I’ve found, to help you wind down, relax and relieve stress after a tough day at school!
A brief overview of the benefits of Essential Oils

If you haven’t had anything to do with essential oils, I’d thought I’d give you a little bit of background about them.
Essential oils are concentrated oils derived from plants and have unique properties that can naturally support your health and this is called Aromatherapy, which I’m sure you’ve heard of.
Humans have used these natural essences from plants for thousands of years to treat a variety of health conditions and there is a huge variety to choose from. For example peppermint oil, lavender oil, lemon oil, tea tree oil and rose oil. You may even have some of these in your bathroom cabinet.
I personally have had an interest in essential oils for many years and I love the idea of using their natural properties as part of a holistic approach to my own health.
With careful guidance, I’ve been using several oils to help me to unwind and decompress while at home to deal with stress and overwhelm from my job.
In my search for the best essential oils for teachers, particularly to help with stress relief and relaxation, I’ve become an advocate of Doterra Essential Oils because of their quality and the huge variety to choose from.
I’ve been gaining a great deal of information from books like Essential Oils; Ancient medicine by Dr Josh Axe, Ty Bollinger and Jordan Rubin. and you can read my post called Wellness books I’m Reading Lately, where I discuss the wealth of knowledge of this ancient medicine, that you can use in your own home too.
What I’ve learnt is that Essential Oils have an amazing capacity to help with relaxation, assist in relieving stress and support your immune health, all needed to help teachers in their demanding jobs.
This is just what I needed, as I get quite wound-up and stressed after a long day at school, as many of you do too.
Best essential oils for teachers to Support health naturally

The best three essentials oils for stress-relief that I’m using at the moment are Frankincense, Geranium and Lavender. They all have wonderful relaxing qualities needed to help calm the nervous system and are easy to incorporate in your day.
Frankincense Oil
Frankincense oil ‘often called the ‘king of oil’s’ is a powerful, effective and incredibly therapeutic oil and comes from the Boswellia tree.
It is one of the most prized and precious essential oils known for its extraordinary health benefits (Axe, Bollinger and Rubin, 2016). You might remember from your childhood, that this is one of the oils presented to baby Jesus at his birth.
‘It has a warm and woody, sweet and spicy, rich and resinous aroma with a light lemony undertone’ (Wilson, 2002).
Key Benefits of Frankincense Oil:
Combats negative emotions and stress

Lavender Oil
Lavender oil is the most commonly used essential oil in the world.
It is often considered a must-have oil to keep on hand at all times due to its versatile uses; including relaxing properties that promote peaceful sleep and ease feelings of tension (Axe, Bollinger and Rubin, 2016). You might already have this one in your medicine cupboard.
Key Benefits of Lavender Oil:

Home Remedy:
Here is a home remedy using Lavender Essential oil. It will help you to wind down and relax after a busy day at school. I use this one regularly and it’s great to do before bed to prepare the body for restful sleep.
Healing Bath salts – combine 1 cup of Epsom salts and ½ cup of baking soda. At bath time add dry ingredients to bath with 10-15 drops of lavender oil. Soak for 20 – 30 minute to relax.
Geranium Oil
Geranium is commonly used as a holistic treatment to improve various aspects of physical, mental and emotional health, as it has antidepressant, antiseptic and wound-healing properties.
Key Benefits of Geranium Oil:
Helps balance hormones, and can help ease the symptoms of PMS and menstruation
Assists in relieving stress
Helps fight depression
N.B. Since geranium oil influences certain hormone secretions, please avoid during the first trimester of pregnancy, and use in topical dilutions only thereafter.

How to Use an Essential Oil Diffuser in the Classroom
Many teachers like to diffuse oils in their classrooms by using an essential oil diffuser to disperse the oils throughout the room. That way there, the entire class benefits from the aroma.
It is best to keep it simple with single essential oils at first to ensure students do not have any sensitivities to the oils.
You would just add 4 to 6 drops of your chosen essential oils to a diffuser with the recommended water amount your diffuser requires.
3 ESSENTIAL OILS EVERY TEACHER NEEDS TO HAVE IN THE CLASSROOM
As fall comes into view, it means one thing — school is right around the corner. Teachers have a big role to play in making sure their students have a beneficial experience this Fall as they head back to school. Luckily for teachers, Davina Wellness essential oils are here to help teachers in the classroom. Essential oils can do a lot to help teachers out — from keeping students happy and focused, to keeping teachers calm and relaxed.
Of course, teachers will want to check with their school to make sure it’s ok to use essential oils in the classrooms — each school with have its own rules. Diffusing oils may be ok, but topical application of oil may not be. It’s always safer to double check with administration rather than risk breaking any rules.
In order to get the effects of oils to the most students possible, we recommend teachers use diffusers. If you’re not sure how to use a diffuser, or you still need to pick one up, check out our diffusers page to find one that best fits your classroom. To help teachers get started using essential oils in the classroom, we’ve compiled a list of our top three essential oils that every teacher needs to have on hand:
Focus Pocus
Keeping a child focused on a task can be challenging. Take that challenge and multiply it by 30, and you have a teacher’s job every single day. Focus Pocus is perhaps the best essential oil for school because it helps student keep their minds on track. This blend of Cedarwood, Vetiver, Frankincense and other oils is particularly effective for students with ADD. Simply diffuse a few drops during work time and watch them go!
Body Armor
Even though most schools maintain high sanitation levels, and most teachers diligently clean their classrooms —the fact of the matter is that germs can spread rapidly when you pack lots of kids into a small space. That’s where Body Armor comes in. Diffusing Body Armor essential oil helps purify the air and when inhaled, the oils help strengthen the immune system. The blend of Wild Orange, Cinnamon, Clove, and other oils is especially useful during winter months. During “cold season” this is one of the best essential oils to stop germs in their tracks and keep students (and teachers) healthy .
Zentered
Zentered is a natural blend of forest oils that lets users feel calm, centered, and grounded. During lectures and reading time, it’s easy for students to start feeling antsy and fidgety. Zentered essential oil helps create an environment that’s peaceful, relaxing, and serene. This oil isn’t just for the students- it’s for teachers too! Working with children all day can be stressful, and this oil can help teachers keep their cool and get through even the toughest of days.
Essential oils can do a lot to make school easier for both teachers and students. Whether you’re a teacher looking to create a better environment for students, or a parent looking for the perfect gift for a special teacher — all of the 3 oils mentioned above are a great option. Always remember that if you plan on applying essential oils topically on children, the oil should be diluted. Davina Wellness sells the above oils in our popular roll-on bottles which are already diluted and are ready-to-use topically. For more information on how to use essential oils you can check out each oil’s product page on Davina’s website.

More Essential Oils for Teachers & Students: Top 5!
Essential oils for teachers – yep! They are all the rage these days, and teachers – more than ever before – are using them in their classrooms and in their everyday lives. What’s the deal?! Since not every classroom and school has the ability to diffuse oils in their classroom environments, I compiled a list of the 5 essential oils for teachers. The oils I’ll be referring to are all from Young Living Essential Oils.
A Wellness Roller
I think the one commonality among teachers is…germs. Yep. They’re everywhere. A roller (you can buy some great rollers off Amazon here) with essential oils that promote a healthy immune system is a tried and true way to boost your health and wellness to fight off the inevitable kid germs!
This is the blend I like to use:
20 drops Thieves
10 drops Lemon
5 drops Oregano
Top off with fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil
I roll this on the bottoms of my feet and on my spine every night before bed. This roller includes a must have set of essential oils for teachers. Sickness, be gone!
Lavender
Lavender Essential Oil
I think sleep struggles are the number two commonality among teachers! After a tough day in the classroom or during testing season, I would often find myself counting sheep WAY past my bed time because I simply couldn’t turn off my brain. Insert LAVENDER. It has calming properties like no other and is such a healthy way to promote a restful night. Lavender is an oil I never go without (like…I literally only order two at a time so I always have a back up!) because it’s in my diffuser every night. This is also a good one to add with fractionated coconut oil in a roller, like the wellness roller above, to roll on your wrists and feet! It’s literally the holy grail of essential oils for teachers.
Thieves
Umm, did I mention germs?! Our classrooms get SO dirty with all of the little (or big!) hands touching everything in sight. The beauty of our jobs is the hands-on nature, but it also means that things simply get grimy. The Thieves cleaning line is an incredible cleaner. Check out this article to learn how it works so much more effectively than standard drug store cleaning products! Thieves is also totally toxic free so it’s great for cleaning manipulatives and toys that end up in…unspeakable places sometimes. The best part is that it’s SO concentrated, so just a capful in a spray bottle topped off with water does the trick, so the cleaner lasts forever!
Envision
I LOVE this oil. First off, it smells amazing – hard to deny. Essential oils do so much more than just smell pretty, but I can’t deny that! Envision is an oil that promotes creativity and productivity which is PERFECT (and needed) for lesson planning. Whether you’re trying to brainstorm a behavior plan that will actually work this time or you’re preparing for a new unit, this oil is always a solid go-to to ensure that your head is in the right place.
Joy
Last, but NOT least – the oil I could not live without. JOY. Teaching is HARD. Yep, hard. I know we all truly love our jobs but that doesn’t make them easy. We love our kids so deeply and it’s challenging not to take on their emotions when a chair comes hurling at you, you hear a heartbreaking story about their past, or when your carefully crafted and totally differentiated math lesson just falls flat. When the paperwork is endless, when you accidentally forget to follow up with a parent, when the Sunday scaries are all too real. The Joy oil has replaced my perfume, and I dab it on my wrists and neck daily (and by that I mean hourly). It’s not a particularly inexpensive oil, so I used my points from Essential Rewards to get a hold of it, and now I know it’s one I need. This is the perfect essential oil for teachers. No, doesn’t take away my paperwork, grade essays for me, or miraculously make behavior plans work effortlessly, but it does help boost my mood and create a sense of joyfulness in my daily chaos. There’s not one teacher I know that doesn’t need that!
A bonus teacher necessity… Ningxia Nitro
Chances are if you’re a teacher, you’re also a serious caffeine drinker! Whether it’s coffee, tea, or Diet Coke… we all have our vices that allow us to keep up with the kiddos all day and keep us awake during our prep periods! I used to drink 3-5 cups of coffee EVERY.DAY. (sometimes more!). Granted, I love coffee, but I also started to NEED it. I now drink one cup in the morning, and squeeze one of these Ningxia Nitros into my Lacroix at lunch (you can also drink them straight out of the tube or mix into ice water!) and it keeps me going through the day, no problem! They’re full of antioxidants, nutrients, and natural sources of energy so you’re not falling asleep AND downing tons of sugar and carbs just to stay awake. I literally love these little things!
So with all this being said, how do you get a hold of these amazing bottles of goodness? Theres a few ways.

When you use these DIY gift ideas for teachers is up to you, but most of them can be customized for any time of year.
They’re also super affordable, especially if you already have some of the ingredients on hand, like lavender essential oil. If you don’t, now might be a good time to stock up on some of the more popular supplies, like essential oils, DIY glass rollers, and glass jars, since most of these ideas make great gifts for just about anybody.
(Don’t have time to make a DIY essential oil gift? We have all kinds of fantastic gifts in the shop right now, or check out this great gift guide for the essential oil lover!
1. Natural (and Fantastic Smelling) Handmade Hand Sanitizer
Handmade hand sanitizer is such a thoughtful gift! Let your teacher know how much you love him or her and want her to stay healthy and well this school season with handmade hand sanitizer. The store-bought kind can contain triclosan, a chemical even the FDA doesn’t like. Plus, it can contribute to resistant strains of bacteria, it smells awful, and it’s incredibly drying.
Instead, DIY hand sanitizer takes advantage of the powerful antiviral and antibacterial properties of essential oils, while also benefiting from skin-nourishing ingredients like aloe and vitamin E oil.
Handmade Hand Sanitizer
Small glass spray bottle, large roller bottle, or reusable silicone tube
1 tablespoon aloe vera gel or vitamin E oil
2 tablespoons witch hazel or vodka
15 drops of essential oils (see below for possible combinations)
Distilled water
Mix ingredients together inside container and shake well until combined. Apply liberally as needed.
Essential oil combinations for immunity:
Citrus zest (5 drops each of orange, lemon, and tea tree oil)
Young Living’s Thieves Oil blend
DoTERRA’s On Guard blend
Tip: take things a step further by making a “Stay Well” basket for your teacher. Include handmade hand sanitizer as well as things like tissues, vitamin C, and immunity-boosting wellness tea.
2. A Day at the Spa (Bath Salts + Body Butter)
Teachers work incredibly hard, and gifting them with some amazing, spa-quality products is a thoughtful way to say thank you. A day at the spa is one of my favorite DIY gift ideas for teachers. The scents I’ve chosen below are sophisticated and invigorating. I like to mix a batch of Rosemary Mint Body Butter (it smells just like the popular Aveda Rosemary Mint line–but it’s much less expensive!) and bath salts so that my giftee can enjoy a nice soak followed by some extra-nourishing moisturization thanks to the amazing properties of shea butter, coconut oil, and vitamin E oil. I also like to mix in dried flowers from my shop in the bath salts for a truly beautiful presentation.
Here’s how to make each:
Lavender Eucalyptus Bath Salts
1 cup of salt (use epsom salts, sea salt, and/or pink Himalyan salt)
6 drops of lavender oil
6 drops of eucalyptus oil
½ cup of baking soda (optional)
1 tablespoon jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil, or argan oil (optional)
Dried flowers
Mix salts and then add essential oils and any optional ingredients (make sure the coconut oil is liquid before adding it). Combine well, and spoon into an airtight jar.
Rosemary Mint Whipped Body Butter
1 cup shea butter
½ cup coconut oil
½ cup olive, jojoba, or almond oil
1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
10 drops of rosemary oil
10 drops of peppermint oil
10 drops of spearmint oil
In a double boiler on the stove (you can also use a glass bowl over hot water), combine everything except the essential oils. Gently heat and stir until melted, then remove from heat, allow to cool slightly, and add essential oils. Place in the fridge for up to an hour. It should start to become hard around the edges, but still soft enough for the next step. Next, whip with a hand mixer until fluffy (this can take up to ten minutes) and return to the fridge until it sets.
Tip: place the bath salts and the body butter in a basket along with a loofah, nice towel, or spa-like scrub brush.
3. A Peaceful Classroom Diffuser Blend
There’s not a whole lot you can do about her classroom full of rowdy fourth graders–or about the fact that she’s stuck on Zoom all day–but at least you can help things smell a little better, and maybe even feel a lot more peaceful, too!
This is a sweet gift if you know your teacher is open to using essential oils but doesn’t want to or have the time to make her own blend. I’ve included a few favorite recipes below, but feel free to substitute your own. What makes this extra special is pairing it with a cute diffuser gift or a beautiful essential oil bottle, like one from our shop.
You could even whip up several favorite essential oil recipes for your teacher to diffuse all year. One of my favorite recipes below to use in DIY gift ideas for teachers is the Anthro blend–it smells just like the big candle that’s always burning in Anthropologie when I visit! Since your teacher can’t use candles in her classroom, this is the next best thing. For an extra spark, choose a crystal you think your teacher would like for extra mood-boosting or calming properties (or just because it’s beautiful!). She can add it to her essential oil bottle or place inside the diffuser.
Anthro Blend (20 drops lemon, 20 drops lime, 12 drops orange, 8 drops grapefruit, 8 drops northern lights black spruce or other fir or spruce, and 4 drops bergamot)
Winter Blend (20 drops each of white fir, cypress, and wintergreen)
Candy Cane Blend (30 drops of peppermint and 20 drops of vanilla)
Christmas Blend (10 drops each of orange, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, and 20 drops of vanilla)
(Find more essential oil recieps for anxiety here!)
4. Freshening Room Spray
Let’s face it–kids are adorable, but they don’t always smell great. I’ve included some blends below to help block the smell, or to help take your teacher away on a tropical island vacation without leaving her classroom. If only it were that easy! Make sure you use a glass spray bottle for this room spray, as essential oils will degrade plastic.
Freshening Room Spray
Glass spray bottle
2 tablespoons witch hazel
20 drops of essential oils (see combinations below)
Distilled water
Add witch hazel and essential oils to the spray bottle (like this pretty iridescent glass bottle) and top with distilled water. Shake before each use.
Beach Vacation Blend (4 drops spearmint, 4 drops tangerine, 2 drops bergamot)
Sunshine Blend (4 drops tangerine, 3 drops lavender, 2 drops lime, and 2 drops spearmint)
Lavender Bergamot Blend (5 drops lavender, 5 drops bergamot)
5. Custom Roller Blend Just for Him/Her
I love essential oils for so many reasons, and one of my favorite ways to thank teachers for all their hard work is to create a beautiful custom roller for him or her. I have a variety of beautiful rollers in my shop (these are an all time fave) that make the gift especially exciting.
I’ve shared a few of my favorite roller blends below. To make yours, add the essential oils to the bottle, then fill the rest of the bottle with fractionated coconut oil or other carrier oil. These are fun to make as gifts in batches; you can also make a trio of your favorite blends for your teacher.
Uplifting Blend (5 drops geranium, 8 drops grapefruit, and 6 drops bergamot)
Focus Blend (8 drops each of rosemary, peppermint, wild orange, and frankincense)
Stress Relief Blend (20 drops lavender, 10 drops ylang ylang)
Headache Relief Blend (5 drops each of peppermint, rosemary, and lavender, and 2 drops eucalyptus)
Tip: pair each blend with its own crystal. You can place the crystal inside the roller, use a crystal roller, or simply gift a crystal. There’s no wrong way to pair crystals and oils, but here are a few of my favorite combinations:
Amethyst is helpful for many people. It brings balance and confidence and pairs well with frankincense, clove, and cypress.
Apatite helps with energy, goals, and growth. It pairs well with peppermint and citrus oils.
Aquamarine increases courage and helps to calm the mind. Pair it with clove, chamomile, or lavender.
Labradorite helps with mental sharpness and inspirations. It pairs well with peppermint, lemon, and neroli.
